Providing Unique Identification numbers to all Indians , the plan by Indian government could be a big catalyst for the IT industry in India which for some time has seen a decline in big ticket projects. The government appointed Infosys Technologies Co-Chairman Nandan Nilekani as head of an Authority for this purpose.Nanden Nilekani will hold Cabinet Minister rank for this ID project and he ready to step down Infosys' board with effect from July 9, 2009.
In 2006 , Nilekani was one among the 100 most influential people in the world , awarded by the Times Magazine. He will helm the building of a national identification database for India’s 1.2 billion people. The country has no single, uniform ID document.
It had been a tough decision to quit “a company that I’ve been part of for 30 years” and the appointment was a chance to do something for the country, Nandan said .Also he states that he could not refuse PM's offer to hold this position.
CII welcomes the move made by the Indian government for appointing Nandan Nilekani to lead this initiative, and said that Nilekani's technological acumen and managerial mind will help deliver a project of this magnitude. Also this ID project can catalyse domestic IT business, open new markets , CII quoted.
